Spot Gen3

So looks like its been delayed a few times. Does anyone have any real world info on when this might be officially released?

Since I sold my Spot Connect, i'm planning on getting a standalone spot for my upcoming trip. Just wondering if I should get a Gen2 or just try to wait for a Gen3. Trip is in Aug.

Have you looked at the Delorme InReach or InReach SE as an alternative to SPOT?
Similar function,better satellite system,better messaging.

REI was supposed to have the SPOT Gen3's yesterday, but they haven't gotten them yet.

Sounds like the Gen3 is a nice upgrade from the Gen2, it can recharge using a USB, automatically posts to social media like facebook/twitter, has a scalable refresh rate for your location that can be set from 2-10 minutes and it'll stop refreshing if you stop.

I'm going to order one from rei.com and just wait it out.

ya just ordered one right now.

REI is running a $20 bonus gift card with any purchase over $100 this weekend. Combined with my REI membership, thats really $35 off, and free shipping. Cant hate on that. Too bad they charge tax in my state =(

REI's website shows 'em in stock in a couple of stores in the metro-boston area.

I agree that the Delorme is a good solution just not for everyone.. exploring can be expensive enough Delorme doesn't help. Twice the device cost and twice the service cost. True Globalstar has ongoing issues but is well one the way to repairing them. If I had an unlimited budget I'd go with Delorme until then SPOT is the only solution.

Just received mine today - already disappointed that it doesn't come with an armband (which is how I always carry/use it when I'm riding solo).

It can only be powered and have firmware updated via USB - it will not recharge batteries. And it's not considered to be waterproof when the USB charging option is being used.

You can already do this with the Gen2 series.

Default rate is 10 minutes - if you want to be able to set the other tracking rates you need to pay extra (on top of the minimum $150 per annum fee) and update the firmware: $50 per annum allows you to set 5-60 minute tracking rates, $150 per annum allows you to set 2.5-60 minute tracking rates.

There have already been some reported issues with the motion sensor not being sensitive enough - apparently it is not detecting movement for some riders on super smooth bikes and roads.

I picked up a Gen3 from the local REI yesterday and I have a question about the USB power cord. How do you hardwire it into a motorcycle? I would assume that you need a converter of sorts to reduce the voltage from 12v down to 5v.

Whether SPOT is the solution somewhat depends on what you consider the problem to be. Here's a recent experience of mine with SPOT's SOS feature:

I'll bet that if you're laying in a ditch in BFE for several hours wondering if anyone received your SOS and if help is on the way, suddenly the minor incremental cost of an Inreach will seem pretty small.
