54 Tennessee State Parks -- Cordell Hull Birthplace

Through random Google mapping I discovered that my last 54RR to Harpeth River State Park left me excruciatingly close to Montgomery Bell State park. Ignorance is not bliss. I thought about a quick trip to clean up that little bit of neglect, but I had the greater portion of the afternoon on a perfect riding day. I Googled some more to the east, where great roads lie.

There I saw a park I didn't know existed:

Cordell Hull Birthplace

It is worthwhile to know something about this notable Tennessean:

Cordell Hull

I anticipated the log cabin and items of the times, and I wasn't disappointed. The most striking feature of the place was John, the enthusiastic student from Tennessee tech who was obviously in love with the place and the story and heritage of Cordell Hull.

There was a demonstration of making Native American stone arrowheads. My wife had the camera set on "fireworks" trying to capture the "big moon" fire works the night before, so no pics of that.

But first, how I got there. I like Liberia's posting of routes as I am a map kind of guy:

The embed just doesn't want to work, so the link:

Route

The easy way is to stay on I-40 all the way to Cookville, take hwy 111 north all the way to Byrdstown.

That is absolutely no fun. No I took delightfully nasty, rough, curvy, unpredictable roads (141 and 85) that nobody but locals (and me) should be on. It was a great day and a great ride.

Wonderful gem of history. Thanks for unearthing, polishing and sharing another one.

Rutabaga, thanks! I had to relearn some things I had forgotten a long time ago.

I have to learn before I can relearn

Thanks, Aldntn, for another good report. As a 22 year transplant from Florida, I still have a lot to learn about our Tennessee history. I see Cordell Hull's name in various places but never really knew much about him.
