SV1000 or Versys or...
Looking for an upright sitting, preferably naked bike I can commute on, and still have a blast in the canyons. Highway duties are not important, mostly just blast around town and cause trouble type stuff. Also thought about 919 and 2nd gen FZ1, trying to stay under 5K.

Love my SV1000. The naked models are hard to find... they were only made in 2003. But the half-faired version (SV1000S) can sometimes be found with a handlebar conversion kits (like my LSL kit). I got my '04 for $3800 two years ago. I've put 18,000 miles on it for a total of 32,000 and have done 3 track days and 1,000+ trips. It's been great.

I've never ridden an FZ1 but every owner seems to love them.

I have an SV1000N and it is a really good bike for what you describe. Gobs of torque, sweet exhaust note, reasonably upright, tho not as much as you would think. (The Versys is FAR more upright) Great tranny and suspension. However for me I have never been able to find a seat that was comfortable on it, even an airhawk didn't work. So it is a one gas tank a day kinda bike for me or 150 miles, and then I'm done.

If I could go back and do it again, as much as I love my SV, I would have bought a first Gen FZ1. That bike fits me like a glove, another 20hp and has much greater aftermarket.

It might not have the soul of the v twin, but to me it's a much better bike.

Love the SVs! I've never owned one but have owned the SVs ugly sister--the V-Strom 1000. :lol3
Sweet,sweet engine, and with aftermarket cans the sound is just amazing! Had a set of Two Brothers on the Strom.

I really dig the looks of the '03 Naked.

The 919 is the lightest and most flickable. It makes power similar to a V-twin. It gets my vote.

I love my naked SV1000 with custom seat, fly screen, GSXR suspension, and mini-MX bars. It is just as light as a 919 and has more power and torque. I like the Versys too, been looking for a crashed one to build a giant Supermoto!

All the bikes mentioned are nice. It all depends on what your personal expectations are. I think it is fair to say that the better deal you get on a bike makes you like it more. This factors in when over looking short comings or perceived short falls. Thus is the story of my 06 Gen II FZ1.
The 06 FZ1 model had some cracked frame and jerky/snatchy throttle fueling issues, the fueling issues are subjective to each riders opinion. It’s not that big of a deal to me, besides that can be fixed if so desired (not so much with the cracked frame issues!). My 06 is fine so after 7 years I think it's a good one. The 07 and especially 08 and newer models have addressed the problems. What makes me like the bike is I got a great deal on it at $4K and with 8,000 miles on it. It has made an excellent commuter for my 40 mile round trip commutes. I feel I got a lot of bike for the money and 10,000 miles later I continue to enjoy it because of that. The bike has a split personality. It’s no low end V-twin torque monster but the I4 engine will pull around town just fine at 4000 RPM. Wind it up to 8000 RPM and hang on, whole different machine. In stock trim I get in the low to mid 40s mpg while taking it easy on the commute. Naturally with mods and aggressive riding the mpg figure will quickly go down the drain.
The Gen IIs almost upright seating ergonomics with my 49 yr old body and 32” inseam gets a little cramped after about 75-100 miles. I am ready for a break. The FZ1 makes more power than I’ll ever use and for the way I ride the stock suspension is fine. The bike can easily exceed its stock suspension capabilities, but most stock “price point” built bikes are that way.
Ok, that’s a plug for the Gen II FZ1! The other bikes mention especially the SV1000 V-twin sounds like a great bike too. The parallel twin Versys also makes an excellent commuter (owned one). There are a lot of nice used bikes for under $5K. Good luck with your decision!

Cast your gaze a bit wider and you'll find some seriously neato Euro bikes like the BMW R1150R, which makes a great townie bike. You can maintain it yourself in a back alley, if you must. Tires are normal sized. It's comfy. Does two up fine. Value will likely not drop much farther than it is now (between 3 and 5k for about a 10 year old one). And you can find them with bags and stuff already on there, low miles from old men owners, and sometimes with some neato parts like reworked or fancier shocks.
AND I find that when I ride something with the roundel on the tank that the fuzz tend to leave me be relative to when I'm riding some custom bike or loud 4 or 2 banger Jap machine (or Harley).
I don't often advocate for BMW because I was basted in their juices for too long. But they're neat machines and pretty tough, provided you don't try to fix everything with a hammer and a 12 pack.
Something to consider.

919 gets my vote, its affordable, freakishly reliable, parts are cheap, comfortable, and is a TQ monster. The 03's and up have adjustable suspension.

On a side note, it will power wheelie with very little effort ;-)

919 got torque down low yes, but monster? nah just normal for its type, my old Sprint 955iST had a tad more torque.
Torque monster is Yamaha MT-01 and Triumph Rocket3:deal

Thanks for the response. The 919 is def in my list. There's also a nice 599 I'm looking at.

Do all the 919's have a fast idle switch? I do want something I can start up and go. I'm looking at an 06', what changes were made to the newer ones?

As far as I know, all the 919`s have the fast idle knob, but I never needed it even when starting in cold weather. With fuel injection, it has always been start and ride for me. The 919 is a great bike, well made, looks great, (especially in the 2007 red,) and is typical Honda reliable. It is a good value, since the newest models (2007,) are going for about $4000, and earlier models for less. It has good midrange, and still has a good top end.
