Buying a bike in Cali without residency?

Hey guys, I'm from Australia and want to get a one way ticket to LA, buy a XR650 or ktm 690 enduro, set it up and ride to chile.
I've got no idea of the legality of my idea though.
Am I able to register it in my name?
Can I ride across boarders to Mexico?
Would I even be allowed in the country with a one way ticket?

As for the bike, what's the best way to buy one and set it up for someone like myself who won't have tools or a workshop?

I don't have any answers for you, but here in the USA California is regarded as the most difficult and expensive state to do most anything in.
If you're not locked into somewhere in CA I would consider flying into Oregon or Arizona instead. Laws and taxes are different in each state here.

And AZ will lock you up and make you wear pink underwear if your green card status isn't perfect... come to LA and have a burrito... it's all good. :clap

Maybe there is the info you need here, but I have not looked carefully:

Good luck.

Oregon has no sales tax but being a out of state person you might not have to pay Cal sales tax. Az will not charge sales tax if you buy a used bike from a privet party. You will need a address so the DMV can mail the papers on the bike. You will need to have the papers for the bike to clear into Mexico so you can get a import permit for the bike and your stuff you bring in. This is a great plain and will be fun to pull off. Find a safe place to stay at night, but a guy on a bike should be OK.

u need to be an Oregon resident to get a tax exempt vehicle from a dealer

being out of state has never gained Me tax exempt in any other state as far as vehicles

I am a 'fixer' for travelers.

I can get you registration, in your name in one day, no license or insurance needed. Title will be in your name.

I can get you insurance for USA. No USA license needed.

You use my address.

The title takes 21 days to come so allow for that if you want to leave for Mexico mainland.

You need actual title to travel to Mexico mainland, not for Baja, not for USA travel.

I can buy a bike for you and get it ready or can help you when you arrive.

We also rent rooms on availability.

Southern California is absolutely the best place to buy, lots of low mileage choices and great condition because of weather.

If you want to start looking (and use me) try craigslist 'all of los angeles'.....or..Ebay '75 miles from 91711'

This should get you started.

email me for simple price list.

Oh, the one way ticket I know little about. BUT a traveler just did it to my house. Hans from Norway. He is on the road now.
I believe he said they only gave him a 90 day stretch when he entered.
It's good to have a destination address and a travel itinerary, but yes it can be done.

Hans is Hansi on here, you may find him somewhere.

I have helped four this year alone.

Whoops. I'll be gone from 11/11/2013 until about 5/11/2014 or maybe 4/11 we'll see.

email me and we'll figure out a plan.

a one way ticket... they won't even let you out of the LA airport.

Not true. Hans flew in to LAX on Friday 12th October 2013 from Norway, with a one way ticket and his departure date was unspecified. I believe he got a 90 day visa at the airport.

I'd be more concerned about riding a motorcycle through Mexico.

Yes. It's really disconcerting. Don't do it.
