That's it in a nutshell. Mine is a 2010 and had the Y connector from the factory and still managed to suck up water. That's why I advised the guy to cut it shorter.

Sounds like its your timing chain. Very common for these engines they have a hydraulic timing chain tensioner, and that's the rpm range where it's noticeable.
