Hmmm... the wiring diagram shows that the earth for the tail light splits off from the earth wire just before the 4 pin connector - you may have a fault with the earth wire / connection in the 4 pin...

I had the same issue when fitting the euro switch to my SE. From memory, I think I simply removed the terminals from the supplied molex connector and fitted them into the SE's original connectors.
