There should be no notch.
Sounds like bearings are bad or dry. May be able to clean and lube but will probably have to replace the bearings and races

I didn't see it posted but the clutch should use mineral oil not brake fluid.
And mineral oil doesn't have the issues with moisture like brake fluid does
Anyway, good luck with finding the problem

The XR is probably one of the most reliable and fun bikes in the dirt. One of the easiest one to kick start but My suggestion since you have hip issues is to look for something with electric start.
