That sounds like a recipe for disaster on an off road bike. Too many situations where the front end braking needs to be done with care so you don't lock up the front wheel and wash it out.

I also put caribiners on the ends of the straps....

I also put caribiners on the ends of the straps. Easy to attach to the carrier and they will not come off under any circumstances - good peace of mind while you're bouncing down the road.
