The steering lock hasn't been cooperating from time to time either when turning to "on" or stopping and trying to turn the front end to the left and taking out the key.

What I meant was I I noticed the corrosion BEFORE I tried to salvage the old battery. Can't imagine why it seemed to boil over, other than it was sitting in the sun for a few weeks.
