I know what you're saying. Had a great 3 day ride in Aus hinterland a few years back, using the Sun as compass & avoided any seal. Never knew where I might end up for the night but a bit silly not...

I'm not sure what all the differences are between the DR & XF frames but obvious ones are wheel base, steering rake & ground clearence. Also the XF head & twin carbs won't fit into the DR frame,...

My Freewind 21" front wheel conversion

Fitted a DR650 front wheel for the "knarlier" rides. Biggest hassle was finding a front fender / mud guard. High mount options seem to interfer with the oil cooler so ended up fitting one off TF125...
