Thanks for the advice. I've considered removing the lower fairing but it's nice in cool weather. Too much protection in the summer though; I hardly use the bike when it's hot.

Yep. I laid-out the position of the piston vis-a-vis the vent hole at 2:30 last night (don't ask) and it was assembled in the right position, must have been the hole.
