Another possible cause

I had the pushrod oil seal fail. Had the same effect as a leaky O ring.
This is the seal where the clutch pushrod penetrates the engine case on the slave side. It wore to the point of seeping oil....

When you pull the slave cylinder off - WATCH THAT PISTON - it'll creep right out on you and then you have a big mess and you have to clean, reinstall and bleed. Easy to fix but a real PIA.
