Go for it! Lots of people take their XR650L all over and the 600 really isnt different from a reliability standpoint. Maybe better, because you don't need a battery to start the bike.

The L brakes aren't bad. Sure, they aren't the greatest, but Honda uses good quality brake components and the L's brakes are more than adequate for its intended purpose.
