I use the included wrist strap wrapped around the bar just for good measure to avoid this.

Tomahawk has great trails, not too much sand and pretty easy to negotiate on the C & A loops as mentioned. Probably some of the most beautiful ground I've ridden in the LP.

Yeah, you do need AMA membership. Clubs do that to get the liability insurance from AMA.

Still a very cool ride and AMA membership is only $35 or so...

The KDX is a great trail bike. Fun, forgiving and cheap to operate. That being said, the KTM quality level is superior but you have to pay to get it.

I say buy it and have a great time.

FWIW, I ride mostly singletrack and slower speeds and my grips put a slight drag on my battery when I had my DRZ. You're probably fine if 2-track or slab or at least mixing it up...
