I did leave the drain plug out with the oil filter off overnight but I never thought it would cause an airlock condition. I guess I should do faster oil changes with this bike and not let it drain...

It's impossible to put the oil filter in backwards on this bike. The housing cover will not go back on. There are two drain plugs.
Was the frame AND crankcase drain plug removed?
