For starters, make sure you don't have "Seasonal Road Closures" checked in the avoidances section of the preferences. Many mountain passes are closed in winter.

I'm using a free media manager called doubleTwist that will sync play lists or albums directly to a card from your iTunes library. The 590 seems to handle them with no issues.
