choices

If your interests are for mostly paved and easy 2-track the heavy twins and polycylinder machines are a logical choice.

For sure get the WR250R. From what you have posted it is the right choice.

I have not owned a 2-stroke in years, so I'm not sure why I gave my 2-cents. I like the thinking for this machine though and others like the Sherco X-Ride and KTM Freeride. The KTM dealer here is...

Try shifting to a higher gear, when it is pulling it will run more steady.

Since you say the carb has been modified for power with richer jets. May want to take along some leaner jets for the high elevations in Mongolia.

knobs,

It may not be the tire. Each knob pattern and rubber compound is designed for a type of riding condition and obviously this changes some with the season for the same area.

You don't have to change anything on the DR-Z. I have the stock seat, the foam density is fine, just narrow. I have had mine 2 years and 15,000 miles so far and now is the only machine in the garage....

Cut and stick some oiled air filter foam up it. Keeps dust out of this part of the carb, and will not affect response. I filter all the other vent tubes, like the radiator, and gas cap to atmosphere...

About the same aftermarket for both. I sold the DR and kept the DR-Z. It just does the off pavement better, and I like the 40 pounds less weight.

KTM or ?

I'd go with the KTM if that your #1. But then I ride muti-day trips and lots of miles on a Suzuki DR-Z400S. 10,000 miles is really not that many miles.

The IMS has a 4.0 gallon tank, no 4.9. I get a reliable 220 miles per tank. Get the natural as it lets you view the level. Takes the guess work out of how much is in the tank.

redline?

The DR-Z is a short stroke motor, so yes it needs rpm to develop torque and hp. Stock gearing is 15/44. To compare what rpm you are using at different mph a good source is www.gearingcommander.com....

Thanks for the report, K16HBN.
The DR-Z400 seems like a good choice for rides who put on the miles.

suspension for heavy guy

Step at a time. Get the springs first. I have found any fork oil heavier than stock makes the action very stiff.
