OK, I've got the alloy wheels

and I use the S2000 (which is a waste of money because you can get the same thing from Home Depot by the gallon for less) all the time with no ill effect on the wheels. You can't use it on the...

I've never seen anything that bad

IMHO, even a strong detergent wouldn't do something like that. I've got experience with metal finishing from bright dip to electropolishing and that kind of damage looks like years of salt. That...

I have no idea why mine keeps going

39,000 miles and no problems. I've only been changing the FD oil at 12k intervals. I've heard that the early GSs were assembled more as prototypes than on the line and I might have one of those...

the cross drilled disks hold dust and dirt

My GS does this squealing coming to a stop all the time except right after a bath and cleaning the disks with a brush and then cleaning with brake cleaner. That lasts for all of 10 miles. The pads...

I usually let it run while I put my gloves on

But that's about it. I've noticed that when I shut down the throttle at the end of the parking lot the engine will stammer a bit, which can get a little goofy. About 30 seconds to get the gloves on...

I've got the BestRest Light bar

with a couple of big IPF dual beams on each side. The bar works well. You do want to get the aux lights as far forward as possible though. If you don't the wind screen flares with pick up spilled...

at the limits I'd ride on the street either bike handles well

If you're going to try to go fast in the Alps you might well become a statistic. I'd get the GS so you can see over all the funny little cars. Plus, to echo what was already said, when the road...

Grey goes with everything....

I'm told the black cases get no hotter than the silver ones. Beyond that it's all asthetics and what you like. There's always power coat in white, too. I think the Jesse's a powder coated unless...

just put Anakee 2s on the bike

switched over from Tourances. It took about 200 miles before the Anakees broke in but they are going well now. They do have the stiffer sidewall so you pick up more road bumps in the bars. ...

aircraft cable locks, dogs, & guns?

Stainless steel aircraft cable locks are more difficult to cut without the right tools. Dogs are good. Anything to make life difficult for the crooks.

Be careful posting notes about using guns...

watch out for condensation in the tube on the tools

unless you fit some sort of expansion bladder and put dessicant in the tube the heating and cooling of the air will suck in moisture until you find your tools are dripping wet and rusty. I only use...

I'm running a patched front tire right now

I've not had any leaking at all. It's due for replacement next week as it won't pass inspection because it's worn out.

I've never heard of a patch or plug failing if it seated correctly in the...

I went with the normal weight specified (I've forgotten it) and went with 240ml as I never had any oil leak problem with the seal. I wish the 2005 had a drain plug because I don't like pulling...

I've never had my GS actually break

My Ducati left me stranded several times. So did my Yamaha. Hondas and BMWs, never. Added a Kawasaki to the barn recently but I think that's a safe bet.

Of course the flip side is that you...

OEM windshield showing signs of crazing

OK, this is a 2005 GS that is in the parking lot 8 hours a...

I've been running "normal" tourances

studding kits are available

If you mounted some Conti TKCs and put studs in the knobs that is probably the best way to go. But anything that's good on ice isn't so good on dry roads. I think Aerostitch offers a studding kit...

you need at least 3000 RPM to keep the engine happy

well, that's on my 2005 GS but there's not that much difference in the engine. I know mine doesn't like to pull below 3000 RPM with just me on the bike.

I would go with an extended warranty with...

KLR 650 isn't a bad choice

There are a lot around and can be bought reasonably. Decent dual sport. There is also the Suzuki V-Strom but that might be more expensive.

Touratech offers something that adds 16 liters to the tank capacity..

I don't know about the retrofit you're talking about but Touratech offers a "bolt on" kit that puts two 8 liter "side tanks" alongside of the existing R1200GS tank.

odd, my 2005 specifies 89 octane

By the US methods my bike says 89 octane. I've been running mostly that for the 7 years. I do switch to 93 if I fill up at BJs or if I'm fully loaded up. But otherwise it's been 89 all the time.

No problems with hooking a battery minder up directly to the battery with the battery connected to the bike. The CANBUS will just see 12v (or close to that) so no problems.

The idea of taking a...

Interesting replies. Guess I'll put some more fuel on the fire.

If you're riding a GS I expect that utility trumps "beauty". I expect a good case for a GS to be big enough for all the camping...

My 2005 seats have been no trouble. I just wash them with the rest of the bike. Park in the sun all day. I don't park under pine trees and I keep solvents away from the seats but that's it.

Aren't the BMW OEM bags just Touratech?

Not that Touratech makes a bad product, but you pay a lot less for the Touratech "brand" than the ones that have "BMW" stamped on the side.

You can always sell the OEM rack on ebay or here, I...
