Check the v notch as stated above. Get the oil out of there! Same happened to me on my new to me GS. The hypoid swelled the rubber in the driveshaft necessitating replacement.

Try doing a leakdown test, a bit more telling than mere compression. Leakdown will allow you to hear air escaping. Rings on Nikasil bikes are consumable and easy, valves may be in need of re-doing....

Whatever the OP decides to use doesn't seem as important to me as flipping the whole assembly so the stuck barrel is on the underside of the case. Then fill the barrel with whatever and let it soak....
