I've got an early 2008. Done the recalls. Never left me stranded or had any major problems. I don't think you need to be afraid for an early bike given that the recalls are taken care of and the bike...

You cannot connect it to the stock accessory...

You cannot connect it to the stock accessory outlet. I draw to much for that and the canbus will disconnect the power. You will need a separate outlet connected to the battery (and a fuse)

I can only agree. Mine must be from one of the first productin batches 2008 and has not failed whatsoever. Even the chain has been great (but got it replaced under warranty after 18 000 km :-) ).
