The K&N air filter wouldn't stay tight because the hose clamps had nothing hard to clamp down on. I found a piece of muffler pipe that fit the inside of the radiator hoses and cut rings out of it.

That won't work actually. Every time I've counted the teeth I ended up with a number a lot higher than 8 or 9. I think there's something odd about the starter that keeps you from counting them.
