I couldn't help myself and I've got the whole timing cover off. Sure enough, the chains missing the link. I'll get it back on and go from there.

I had a similar issue after I rewired my 71 bike. I found that the lack of grounding wire to the front turn signals was the cause. I add a grounding wire to them and haven't had a problem since.

Have you tried running the engine with the front cover off so that you can see what's going on?
I suspect the crank bearing or timing chain as that's what's behind the alternator.

Yeah, they're the original bosch 6 volt coils. You might be right. I'm hoping it's the points or condenser as I have a set of those spare. Otherwise, they'll be no riding for a week.
