For me it's waterproof. I don't carry extra rain gear opting instead for a extra pair of dry socks and a dry shirt.

Really depends on where you are taking your trip. Wife and I went 2-up on the CDT from Colorado to Canada and had a lovely time. 2-up last year through Michigan's UP (SAND so much SAND) into Maine...
