I don't think the extensions would be a good solution - at least the way I made them. They would probably need another bolt to stabilize them instead of just the one bolt at the original axel...

Forgot to add: The 6 gal Aluminum gas tank weighed in at 9 lbs (tank + aluminum filler neck and plastic gas cap).

That's only 4.5 lbs more than the Storz 2.75 gal tracker tank.
