You can't 'map' the slider to take pictures but if you set the video to time lapse mode, it will record smaller resolution pictures in a video. You can extract pictures from the video later.

As you found, Direct Routing is the only way to get those routes to work if there are no actual roads. That way the route will only point to the next waypoint, and not try to find you a road to take...
