Mine did the same thing, M94 trannys skip. M97 doesn't, the dog gears are undercut.

I found a 99 R1100R transmission, (same gears as the GS) and is in my GS now, no skips.

That would work, you def want to do Old Ore Road on you way in. You should still have plenty of time to set up camp before dark. Then do River Road first thing in the morning.
