A lot less heat. Coil springs generate a lot of heat when they are cycled rapidly. Heat that isn't in the combustion chamber pushing down the piston is wasted.

It's not a seal for the exhaust port. The flange seals to the head with a flat oval gasket with holes for the exhaust flange studs. Perhaps it isn't part of the engine.
