I believe they are connected. On my bike the speedo read ~ 5% fast and the odo was OK. With the 19" setting the speedo is right on and the odo now reads fewer miles than actual as verified by GPS.

I think $1,400 for a 2 year warranty is pretty steep. If you can work on the bike yourself the extended warranty is probably not necessary. I have not read of any catastrophic failures on this forum...
