Sounds to me like you need to richen the mixture if the header is getting cherry red you are also probably running the risk of holeing a piston or seizing the motor.

I got rid of the fender extension and bent up a piece of heavy aluminum stock to make a plate bracket that bolts up under the remaining fender. Pretty easy to make or Pro Cycle have them ready made....
