I also hate living in the 'burbs, so I hear ya there. My girlfriend and I are having a similar dilemma. We think the eastside sucks - strip malls and housing developments, not our style either....

Okay, after reading the suggestions today and drooling over those squiggly lines on googlemaps, I came up with this route:
Day 1, 275 miles, 8 hours: Gladstone>224 to Detroit Lake>22 to 126 down...
