The rubber mount appears to have closed ends. I am not sure how important this is to holding the mount in place, but the rubber hose idea is worth trying.

I have never heard gear selection have any direct relationship with hall sensor failure.

The typical hall sensor failure is induced by heat.

It is hard to image the hall sensor would work up...
