I would not change the oil so often. Just make sure you use motorcycle type oil. I change oil at 3000 miles with a petroleum based oil, using a synthetic oil I would change at 6000 miles, or more. ...

If you put the motorcycle on a MX stand so it is upright and squeeze the engine back in on the throttle side is what works for me. You have to remove the foot brake and master cylinder but it worked...

Get a petcock called a Raptor from Procycle that you can shut the gas off. It is a Yamaha petcock that will fit the DR tank, that has a off position. The stock DR petcock can't be shutdown.

I would not ride it. Drain the oil and change the filter. Look for flakes of metal in the drained oil and cut the filter apart looking for metal.

With 4500 miles I would not think it is a 3rd...
