regarding ferries, the Port Angeles ferry is one of the worst for bikes in my experiences because it rolls side to side with any wind or rough water conditions, I mean REALLY rolls.

I use a Starcom system in a Shoei helmet riding on an F 800GS. I also wear those cheepie foam ear plugs. No problems hearing music or gps directions. Never felt I needed a amp to increase volume....

I might suggest that he may have rested his foot on the brake allowing brake drag and then the heat build up causes the brake to lock. This is especially true if the free play is not correct.
