In a two month period a couple of years ago I went thru two rear tires due to screws. I haven't had an issue since but that was an expensive couple of months buying Pilot Powers.

+1 This made a big difference for me along with grips on the side of the tank to ensure that I was not slipping and forcing me to lean forward and putting more stress on the grips.

The coldest was when leaving NH in October. It was 19 degrees and light snow was starting. Rode all day back to MD. That was cold ride when over 80mpg at times. Mostly the cold is less a factor...
