As long as you don't stream a lot of data (Netflix, Pandora, etc.), look into Page Plus.
It uses the Verizon network, so the coverage is the same. I get 1500 minutes, 1500 texts, and 100 MB data...

I hit my top speed on my last trip just west of Carrizozo, NM. Got a performance award about an hour later headed into Alamogordo (far less speed). Only $75! No wonder everyone speeds!
