It keeps the weight of the bike over the front tire. More weight, more flex, more heat, more wear. I've managed to kill a front tire before the rear that way with mix of street and track riding.

I can confirm that, they are pretty high effort to initiate a turn and perfectly neutral once leaned. They are also danmed heavy, the tire weight was the first thing I noticed when they were spooned...
