An idea
If you habitually park the bike on its sidestand instead of the centerstand,
this has been known to happen. Did you do this?

Cheap, Sturdy boxes
You can adapt 50 CAL. Ammunition cans. Very sturdy, can be made lockable and are moisture-proof. Google them and see what I mean.
Guys used to use them on KLRs all the time.
