I replaced the wheel cup on my 81 R100RT years ago using sholdered aircraft bolts. Worked great! The holes were not ovaled.

The original idea of the soft rivets is to protect the rider in an accident. The windshield easily rips off instead of slicing thru the driver! The solid nuts and bolts will prevent that.
