Last year I went 'round Tassie with a Canon EOS400D and a 17-85mm f/4-5.6 lens in a camera bag in my top box. I came home and took my lens back to Dr Canon as the aperture had rattled to pieces.

For me, the crash bars have saved me the most $$$ so far - a 990 lands pretty hard!
