I have read in the past (perhaps from Oak) that you shouldnt remove the carbon ridge at the top of the barrel if your reusing the same rings. Something about it being a seal of some sort.

ME 109, looking at my extra 17.5 input gear they swapped ends on the two pieces that slip/rotate. The newer gear has the round ears. Which means absolutely nothing in your case.
