Ok, problem solved. Filling the battery has helped. The bike ran fine on the way home today. But that Transalp saddle really isn't made for 600kms and 7 hours on one day. ;)

I second the thermostat test. Also, feel the hoses and the radiators when the engine goes hot to see whether the heat spreads evenly. Cold spots mean clogging or in the worst case no flow of coolant...
