Dave, good investment would be kick-starters on your two DRZ's. Have had one on mine for 10 years and when needed it never failed to start the bike.....even with dead battery. Bump starting is easy...

Dead Battery

Make it easier to jump start (exposed plugs from each battery), keep it running, keep heading for the coast....would have been my remedy. Sheat, it is only 60 miles.

DRZ 400 Kick Starters

I have a 2001 DRZ E with Factory Kick starter and the magic button. Have never use the kick starter in the field. Just in the garage once a year to see if it still works.
