I'll only clean a screen caked with bugs and grime with hot soapy water and sponge. Afterwards I use Honda Pro Cleaner to polish and protect pretty much every surface on the bike.

The transmission on the 1150 has just 6 bearings and 7 seals. Aside from the splines the clutch rides on, not much else goes wrong with these. Here is a link to a rebuild....

Don't see the regulator has anything to do with it. I've had the same problem on my '11 GSA. Twice I ran out at 300 mi. Had to lay the bike over... upon filling still had 1-2 gallons in the tank....
