Part of this is riding technique- I ride mostly on the balls of my feet, maybe just a little behind them. If the brake lever were longer, I'd have a more difficult time reaching it.

What you'd gain in swept area you'd likely lose in heat retention.

Never wanted a larger rear brake. Rarely use it much on the street, and it locks quite nicely on the dirt if I want to slide.
