When mine went, the primary culprit appeared to be plain-old moisture incursion, though surprisingly little. Q-tip, alcohol, and epoxy to reseal did the trick FWIW.

If your first wave of fixes don't do the job, don't rule out a faulty TPS (or what BMW the "throttle valve switch" just to be different). Last year in the middle of nowhere I had low idle issues...
