To get mine out I used a needle nose vise-grip with max tension on the bung lip. Pull on straight back on the vise-grip while lightly tapping it with a hammer. The vibrations will break it loose...

The springs don't change the length of the shock. You can change the length by having internal spacers added to reduce the stroke length, which also changes the fixed length. Ohlins Techs can do this...
