well .. I think I've finally worked out what's causing it.
When I put the factory rear sprocket back on, I could still feel the vibrations, but they weren't bad enough that I would have noticed...

if you leave your fuel tap on (or it leaks) and...
if you leave your fuel tap on (or it leaks) and the float valve in the carby isn't sealing properly, the float bowl will fill and excess fuel will dribble through the inlet manifold into the piston....

DR650 mostly commuting tyre
well ... for better or worse, I've settled on a Dunlop K850A
Both the MT21 and 606 just looked like they'd wear too quickly commuting.
I hope I don't regret it tooo much :)

whacked a secondhand pipe on the DR and the middle tab needs tweaking. It doesn't quite line up and is far enough out that a simple hole enlarge ain't gonna work ...
