That's my theory on varying FD quality - it's a real pain to build them correctly, especially during Oktoberfest. I got a good one - no metallic flakes, runs nice and cools, no overheating.

That's why BMW doesn't recommend FD oil changes at regular service intervals. Changing it out at 600 miles after initial wear-in makes sense, afterwards it's just a waste of time and money.

Mine never gets more than lukewarm. The high heat is due to friction from the bearings going bad. It will cause your seal to fail unless the bearing locks up first.

If you lock your knee when putting your foot down you're screwed. If your knee is bent you should be fine at low speed. I did it instinctively at 20 MPH with no injury at all.
