I wouldn't leave my bike on the street in any large city and Vancouver is no exception. I'd go for one one the outlying ideas and bus/skytrain around.

Don't take Hwy 1 into Vancouver (Boring zzzzzzzz). Turnoff 97 just north of Cache Creek onto 99 (Sea to Sky). It will take you through Whistler (2010 Olympics) and Squamish.
