Hey Dirtnic!,
I have a '79 xl 500 that had a 6v set up stock. What I did... although it is prolly not the easiest way to go, is to find a doner bike,('82 or newer, with out title... blown up...

Just swapped '82 front end and harness with all of the 12v supporting goodies onto my '79. Still gotta change the bulbs and stuff. The toughest part of the swap was getting all of the '82 electronics...
